3 Day Water Fast (72 Hours). Benefits, Stages and Real Results

Most pages about a 3 day water fast are written by people who read about one. This one is written from the first 72 hours of a doctor supervised 90 day water fast that is still running as you read this. John, 56, stepped on the scale every morning, dipped a ketone strip every morning and filmed how he felt. The numbers are below. Nothing is rounded to make a point.

What a 3 day water fast is

Three full days with water only. No food, no juice, no broth, no coffee for the strict version. John drinks plain water. In the long fast he adds Celtic salt and electrolytes on his doctor’s say so, which is his choice and not a recommendation.

People call it a 72 hour fast when they count from their last meal. People call it a 3 day fast when they count mornings. It is the same fast. This site counts mornings. Day 1 is the first morning without breakfast. The morning of day 4 is the 72 hour mark.

Why three days and not one. Three days is the shortest fast that gets you all the way through the fuel switch. One day gets you tired. Two days gets you the switch. Three days gets you to the other side of it, which is where the surprise lives. Hunger fades instead of growing.

The stages, hour by hour

  1. HOURS 0 TO 24 · DAY 1Running on stored carbohydrate

The body burns glycogen from the liver and muscles. Energy feels normal. Hunger shows up at the usual meal times because the body expects food then, not because it needs it yet. John's day 1 morning weight was 228.6 pounds.

  2. HOURS 24 TO 48 · DAY 2The fuel switch

Glycogen runs low and the body turns to fat. The liver starts making ketones, a fuel the brain can use instead of sugar. Many people feel the switch as a headache, a low mood, cold hands or a flat afternoon. The scale drops fast here because glycogen is stored with water. John woke up at 224.2, down 4.4 pounds overnight.

  3. HOURS 48 TO 72 · DAY 3The hard day

Ketone production is climbing but the body has been under the most stress. John's own words from day 3 were sluggish, low on energy, a little anxious, my body is stressed and I can feel it. This is the day most people quit. He weighed 220.6 that morning, 8 pounds down, with a ketone strip that still read blank.

  4. HOUR 72 · DAY 4 MORNINGThe other side

The edge comes off. John wrote that the wall from yesterday did not follow me into today. He had more energy than the day before. The scale read 218.0, down 10.6 total. His ketone strip showed its first trace, a 5 on the chart. This is the morning a 3 day fast is measured on.

Autophagy, the cellular cleanup process that won a Nobel Prize in 2016, is part of why people fast for three days rather than one. It is real. What nobody can honestly give you is an hour when it starts in a human body, because there is no home test for it. Anyone selling an exact hour is ahead of the evidence.

Two things in that table are worth more than the headline number.

The strip stayed blank for three mornings. He was burning fat by day 3, his body told him so. The urine strip did not catch up until the morning of day 4. If you do a 3 day fast and your strip never turns, that does not mean the fast failed. Strips measure what is spilling out, not what is being made.

Day 3 was the hard day and day 4 was the good day. That pattern, worst on day 3 and better on day 4, is the single most useful thing to know before you start, because most people quit on day 3 without knowing that day 4 is different. The hour by hour post published while he was living it.

What the weight loss is made of

Be honest with yourself about the 10.6 pounds. Glycogen is stored with water, roughly three grams of water for every gram of carbohydrate, so burning through it in the first day or two sends a lot of water out with it. John said it himself on day 3. A lot of this early drop is water leaving with the stored glycogen. It will slow down.

4.7 lbWeek 3
+2.4 lbTwo days after one bowl of broth on day 30

It did slow down. The same curve shows up in the published reviews of prolonged water fasting, a fast early drop that settles into a slower steady loss. A 3 day fast lives entirely inside that early water phase.

Some of it comes back when you eat. On day 30 of his long fast he had a small vegetable broth and a quarter of an avocado. The scale went up 2.4 pounds over the next two mornings. His ketone strip went from 16 to 4 to 0. That is the same water walking back in. It is not a failure. It is what carbohydrate and sodium do.

The benefits people actually get

The honest list is shorter than the internet’s list.

  • A visible drop on the scale. Mostly water, some fat. Real. Read it for what it is.
  • A clean switch into ketosis. Sometimes visible on a strip, usually felt as hunger fading.
  • Cellular cleanup. Autophagy is real. It is not measurable at home and nobody can give you an hour.
  • The mental reset. The thing John talks about most. His day 3 note describes a battle between the body that wants the cookies and the mind that knows better. The whole point of finishing the three days is finding out the mind wins.

What a 3 day fast does not do is fix a blood panel. John’s baseline bloodwork came back with a fasting glucose of 106, in the prediabetes range. The reason he is going 90 days with monthly labs instead of three is that three days does not move numbers like that. It does show you what your body does when food stops, which for most people is the first time they have ever seen it.

What John does each day

This is his routine. It is not a plan for you.

  • Water through the day, steady rather than forced.
  • Celtic salt and electrolytes on the schedule his doctor approved.
  • Walks only. No workouts.
  • A morning weigh in on the same scale and a morning ketone strip, both photographed.
  • The doctor has stop authority. If she says eat, he eats.

The warning signs he watches for are the ones every source on water fasting lists. Severe dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting, confusion. Any of those ends the fast and starts a phone call, not a push through.

Who should not do a 3 day water fast

  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with diabetes or on blood sugar medication.
  • Anyone with a heart condition, kidney disease or a history of an eating disorder.
  • Anyone under 18.
  • Anyone on daily medication that assumes food.

That list comes from the mainstream medical overviews of water fasting and it is not negotiable. If you are on it, the answer is talk to your doctor, not read another page.

John is a 56 year old man with a doctor who has known him for years and watched him complete an 83 day fast before this one. That is why he can do what he does. It is not a reason for you to do it alone.

After the 72 hours

If you are stopping at three days, the first meal is the part people get wrong. Small, simple and slow. John’s day 30 broth showed how much one small bowl can move the scale and the strip. After only three days the risk is lower than after weeks. The lesson holds.

A quarter of an avocado is not free. John, day 32, two mornings after breaking 30 days of water with a small broth and a quarter of an avocado. Ketone strip 16 to 0, scale up 2.4.

If you are curious what comes after day 3, the answer is on this site every single morning. Day 5 is where John called himself officially in ketosis. Day 30 is where he had the broth. Today’s number is on the daily notes page and every lab result is on the bloodwork page.

Quick answers

Is a 72 hour fast the same as a 3 day water fast?

Yes. A 72 hour fast and a 3 day water fast describe the same thing, three full days with water only. The hour version tends to be used by people who start from their last meal and count forward. The day version is used by people who count mornings. John counts mornings. His day 1 morning weigh in was the start, his day 4 morning weigh in was the 72 hour mark. Either way of counting is fine as long as you are consistent and honest about it.

Will the weight from a 3 day water fast come back?

Some of it. The early drop is mostly water that was stored with carbohydrate. That water returns once carbohydrate comes back in. John's first 72 hours took off 10.6 pounds and he has said on camera that a good part of it was water. What stays is the fat the body burned, which is smaller than the scale number. Thirty days later a single bowl of broth and a quarter of an avocado put 2.4 pounds back on him in two days, which is the same water moving the other way. Judge a 3 day fast by how you feel and by the trend over weeks, not by the number on day 4.

Do you reach ketosis in 3 days of water fasting?

Most people are producing ketones by the end of day 3. A urine strip may not show it yet. John's strips read blank on days 1, 2 and 3. The first trace, a 5 on the keto mojo chart, showed on the morning of day 4 and he called himself officially in ketosis on day 5. Urine strips measure the ketones the body is spilling, which lags behind the ketones it is making. The Cleveland Clinic describes ketosis as starting within days of very low carbohydrate intake, which matches what his strips showed.

Can you exercise during a 3 day water fast?

John keeps it to walking. No lifting, no running, no workouts. Day 3 was his lowest energy day of the whole first week and he said his body felt stressed, so pushing a workout on a day like that is how people get hurt. Light movement, water and rest is his approach, with his doctor in the loop. Anyone with a medical condition or on medication should ask a doctor before mixing fasting and exercise at all.

How do you break a 3 day water fast?

Gently and small. John's own lesson came on day 30 of his long fast, when a small vegetable broth and a quarter of an avocado dropped his ketone strip from 16 to 0 in two mornings and put 2.4 pounds of water back on the scale. His words were that a quarter of an avocado is not free. After three days the body is not in danger from a normal meal the way it is after weeks. A small, simple first meal still feels better than a big one. His doctor is the one who signs off on every refeed.

Do you need a doctor for a 3 day water fast?

John does everything with one, including the short fasts. His 90 day fast runs under a doctor who has known him for years, with monthly bloodwork. His baseline labs turned up a fasting glucose of 106 that he would not have known about otherwise. Three days is short enough that many healthy adults do it on their own. Anyone with diabetes, a heart condition, a history of an eating disorder, who is pregnant, or who takes daily medication should not fast without medical advice. This site reports what John does. It does not tell you what to do.
