7 Day Water Fast (One Week). Benefits, Results Day by Day and One Real Week

Most pages about a 7 day water fast are written from theory. This one is written from the first week of a doctor supervised 90 day water fast that is still running as you read this. John, 56, stepped on the same scale every morning, dipped a ketone strip every morning and said how he felt on camera every day. The whole week is below, morning by morning. Nothing is rounded to make a point.

What a 7 day water fast is

Seven full days with water only. No food, no juice, no broth. John drinks plain water plus Celtic salt and electrolytes on his doctor’s say so, which is his choice and not a recommendation.

Counting matters for a week long fast. This site counts mornings. Day 1 is the first morning without breakfast. The morning of day 8 is the 168 hour mark, seven full days without food. John also marked one week done on the morning of day 7, his seventh fasting morning. Both counts appear on this page with their own numbers and nothing hides in the rounding.

The week in one sentence. The first three days are the price and the last four days are what you paid for. Everything hard about John's week happened before hour 72. Everything people fast a week to feel happened after it.

The seven days, one by one

  1. DAY 1 · 228.6 LBRunning on stored carbohydrate

Glycogen from the liver and muscles carries the day. Energy feels normal. Hunger shows up at meal times because the body expects food then. Strip blank.

  2. DAY 2 · 224.2 LBThe fuel switch begins

Down 4.4 overnight, the biggest single drop of the whole fast. Glycogen is stored with water and both leave together. The liver starts making ketones. Strip still blank.

  3. DAY 3 · 220.6 LBThe hard day

The worst day of the week. Knowing that in advance is half the value of this page. John's words were sluggish, low on energy, a little anxious, my body is stressed and I can feel it. Strip still blank after 48 hours.

  4. DAY 4 · 218.0 LBThe other side

The edge comes off. The wall from day 3 did not follow him into day 4. Energy returned and the strip showed its first trace of ketones, a 5 on the chart. Down 10.6 pounds at the 72 hour mark.

  5. DAY 5 · 216.0 LBOfficially in ketosis

The strip showed a clear reading and John called the switch official. His words were I feel good, I sleep well, I have plenty of energy. His baseline labs also landed this day, including a fasting glucose of 106 from before the fast, one of the reasons he is doing this at all.

  6. DAY 6 · 214.0 LBThe body recalibrates

Fourteen pounds down in six days. Leg cramps warned him he was running low on electrolytes and some digestive cleanup ran its course. He drinks between half a gallon and a gallon of water a day.

  7. DAY 7 · 212.5 LBAppetite gone

One week done by his count. I feel good, I feel energetic. And at this point I have lost my appetite. I am not hungry. Just very sensitive to smells. He worked, watched TV and lived a normal day.

  8. DAY 8 MORNING · 211.4 LBThe 168 hour mark

Seven full days complete. Down 17.2 pounds total and the ketone strip matched the darkest square on the chart, a 16. This is the morning a 7 day fast is measured on.

The strip arc matters as much as the scale. Three blank mornings, a trace on day 4, official ketosis on day 5 and the darkest square by day 8. If you fast a week, that is the shape to expect, silence and then a climb.

What 17.2 pounds in a week is made of

Be honest with yourself about a week long number. Glycogen is stored with roughly three grams of water per gram of carbohydrate. The first two days sent 8 pounds out and most of it was water. From day 4 on, the losses settled to 1 to 2 pounds a morning as fat burning carried more of the load. The published reviews of prolonged water fasting show the same curve, a fast early drop that settles into a slower steady loss.

His own following weeks proved the slowdown. Week 1 took off 16.1 pounds by his day 7 count. Week 2 took 8.8. Week 3 took 4.7. Anyone selling you week after week of 17 pound losses is selling.

Some of the water walks back in with the first meals afterward. On day 30 of his long fast a single small broth and a quarter of an avocado put 2.4 pounds back on the scale in two mornings. That is not failure, that is what carbohydrate and sodium do. The fat that burned during the week stays gone.

The benefits people actually get from a week

  • A real weight change. 17.2 pounds on John's scale in seven full days. Part water, part fat, all measured.
  • Deep, verified ketosis. Not the maybe of a 3 day fast. By day 8 the strip left no room for argument.
  • The hunger surprise. Appetite faded to nothing by day 7 instead of growing. This is the single most reported experience of a week long fast and he lived it on camera.
  • Cellular cleanup time. Autophagy is real science, a 2016 Nobel Prize. A week gives the process far more runway than a weekend. What nobody can honestly tell you is an hour by hour schedule, because there is no home test for it.
  • The mental reset. A week proves the mind can outlast the body's complaints. Day 3 was the argument. Days 4 through 7 were the answer.

What one week does not do is fix a blood panel. John’s baseline fasting glucose of 106 is the reason his fast is 90 days with monthly labs, not seven. A week shows you the machinery. It does not finish the job.

What John does each day

His routine, not a plan for you.

  • Water through the day, between half a gallon and a gallon.
  • Celtic salt and electrolytes on the schedule his doctor approved. The day 6 leg cramps are what running low feels like.
  • Walks only. No lifting, no running, no workouts, all week.
  • A morning weigh in on the same scale and a morning ketone strip, both photographed.
  • Normal life otherwise. Work, TV, things around the house.
  • The doctor has stop authority. If she says eat, he eats.

The warning signs he watches for are the ones every source on water fasting lists. Severe dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting, confusion. Any of those ends the fast and starts a phone call, not a push through.

Who should not do a 7 day water fast

  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with diabetes or on blood sugar medication.
  • Anyone with a heart condition, kidney disease or a history of an eating disorder.
  • Anyone under 18.
  • Anyone on daily medication that assumes food.

And beyond that list, a week is where fasting stops being a solo project. Three days is short enough that many healthy adults do it alone. Seven days without food deserves a doctor who knows you, because the risks that matter, heart rhythm, electrolytes and refeeding, are exactly the ones you cannot feel coming. John is a 56 year old man whose doctor watched him complete a supervised 83 day fast before this one. That is why he can do what he does. It is not a reason for you to do it alone.

Coming back to food after a week

The refeed is more serious after seven days than after three. The body has fully switched fuels and a careless first meal is the classic mistake. Small, simple and slow. Build up over days. John’s day 30 lesson applies double here. One small broth and a quarter of an avocado moved his scale 2.4 pounds and swept his ketone strip from 16 to 0 in two mornings. His words were that a quarter of an avocado is not free. His doctor signs off on every refeed.

The week in his own words. I feel good, I feel energetic. And at this point I have lost my appetite. I am not hungry. Just very sensitive to smells. John, day 7, one week without food.

If you are curious what a week becomes when it keeps going, that is this whole site. The 3 day guide covers the hard part of the week in detail. The 30 day guide shows what a month looks like. Today’s number is on the daily notes page and every lab result is on the bloodwork page, updated as the 90 days run.

Quick answers

How much weight do you lose on a 7 day water fast?

John lost 17.2 pounds in his first seven full days, 228.6 down to 211.4 by the morning of day 8. That is a real measured number from the same bathroom scale every morning. It needs honest reading. The first 48 hours took off 8 pounds and most of that was water leaving with stored carbohydrate. The back half of the week ran 1 to 2 pounds a morning as fat burning took over. A lighter person loses less. Some of the water comes back with the first meals afterward. The fat that burned stays gone.

Is day 7 or day 8 the end of a one week fast?

Depends how you count and both ways are honest. John counts mornings. Day 1 is the first morning without food. The morning of day 8 is the 168 hour mark, seven full days, at 211.4 pounds and 17.2 down. He also celebrated one week done on the morning of day 7 at 212.5, because day 7 is the seventh day he woke up fasting. This guide uses the 168 hour number for the week's result. Pick one way of counting, say which one you picked and be consistent.

Are you in ketosis after 7 days of water fasting?

Deeply. By then a urine strip leaves no doubt. John's strips read blank on days 1 through 3, showed a first trace on day 4 and a clear color on day 5, the morning he called himself officially in ketosis. By the morning of day 8 the strip matched the darkest square on the chart. That arc, three blank mornings and then a fast climb, is worth knowing in advance. A blank strip early in the week does not mean the fast is failing. Strips measure what spills into urine, which lags what the body is making.

What happens to hunger during a week without food?

It fades. That is the part nobody believes until they watch it happen. Hunger peaked for John in the first three days, when his body was still expecting meals at meal times. From day 4 the edge came off. By day 7 his words were that he had lost his appetite, was not hungry at all and was just very sensitive to smells. Smell sensitivity while appetite disappears is a strange combination and he reported both on camera. The mistake people make is quitting on day 3, judging the whole week by its hardest day.

Can you work and live normally during a 7 day water fast?

John did. He went to work, watched TV and did his normal things around the house all week. What he did not do is exercise. No lifting, no running, no workouts, only walking, because a week without food is enough stress on the body without adding more. His energy was real from day 4 on but he treats it as energy for living, not for training. He also had leg cramps on day 6, which he read as an electrolyte warning. He adjusted the water, Celtic salt and electrolytes routine his doctor approved.

Is a 7 day water fast safe?

It is a serious medical undertaking, not a wellness weekend. Seven days without food is long enough that the standard medical warnings all apply, dizziness, heart rhythm problems, fainting and dangerous refeeding if you come back to food carelessly. John does it under a doctor who has known him for years, with monthly bloodwork and stop authority. She watched him complete a supervised 83 day fast before this one. Anyone pregnant, diabetic, on daily medication, under 18 or with a history of an eating disorder should not attempt a week of fasting at all. This site reports what John does. It does not tell you what to do.
