30 Day Water Fast (One Month). Real Results, Week by Week

Almost every page about a 30 day water fast is a list of things that might happen. This one is a list of things that did. John, 56, spent August 2026 drinking water and weighing himself every single morning on the same scale, dipping a ketone strip, photographing both and filming how he felt. The 30 days below are days 1 through 30 of a doctor supervised 90 day water fast that is still running while you read this.

What a 30 day water fast is

A month with no food. Water only. John adds Celtic salt and electrolytes on his doctor’s schedule and logs the occasional black coffee in his daily sheet, calling it his version of the fast. That is his protocol and not a recommendation. No juice, no bone broth, no smoothies, none of the soft versions that get called fasting online.

Thirty days sits near the top of what even the supervised world does. The published human trials of prolonged water fasting run about 5 to 40 days, all under medical care. This is not a beginner distance and it is not a solo one. John’s first fast, an 83 day supervised one, is the only reason his doctor signed off on 90.

The 30 day mark is a morning, not a feeling. This site counts mornings. The morning of day 31 is the one month mark, the same way the morning of day 4 closed out the 72 hours in the 3 day guide. Every number below is a morning number.

The month, week by week

  1. DAYS 1 TO 8 · WEEK ONEThe water leaves first

The big scary drop. 228.6 to 211.4, down 17.2 pounds in one week. Most of it was water leaving with his stored carbohydrate. He said so on camera while it happened. Day 3 was the hard day, day 4 the energy came back and by day 7 he was a week without food and feeling steady. The ketone strip went blank, blank, blank, 5, 8 and hit 16 on day 8.

  2. DAYS 8 TO 15 · WEEK TWOThe grind begins

211.4 to 204.3, down 7.1. The glamour drop is over and the fat burn is what remains. This week had the cranky phase, the hunger wave he had to ride out and a metallic taste that is ketosis introducing itself. The strip sat at 16 every single morning now.

  3. DAYS 15 TO 22 · WEEK THREEThe body settles in

204.3 to 197.9, down 6.4. He broke under 200 pounds for the first time in years and stopped being surprised by the scale. The mind became the battlefield instead. Weekends were the hardest part and the smell of fried chicken from a neighbor's yard nearly ended him. It did not.

  4. DAYS 22 TO 30 · WEEK FOURA different body

197.9 to 190.2 on the morning of day 30. This is the week his BMI left the obese range, the week of the best sleep in years and the week he crossed four full weeks. On day 30 he marked a third of the way with one small planned bowl of broth, which turned out to be its own lesson.

What the loss is made of

The month splits into two different fasts. Week one took off 17.2 pounds and a lot of that was water, because the body stores roughly three grams of water with every gram of carbohydrate and both leave together. Weeks two through four took off 6 to 7 pounds each. That slower number is the honest fat burning pace.

The proof of the water story arrived on schedule. When John ate his one small broth and a quarter of an avocado on day 30, the scale jumped 2.4 pounds in two mornings. Nobody builds two pounds of fat from a bowl of broth. The carbohydrate and sodium walked back in and brought water with them, the same water that left in week one. It then took until day 33 to turn back around.

A quarter of an avocado is not free. His own words, two mornings after the broth, watching his ketone strip read zero for the first time since day 3.

What 30 days did to his body scan

His scale reads body composition every morning along with weight. Same scale, same time, so the trend is the story rather than any single reading.

34.6 → 28.8BMI, out of the obese range
42.3 → 31.7%Body fat reading
34.5 → 37.3%Muscle share of a smaller body
40 → 36 inWaist, by his own shorts

The BMI line is the one his doctor cares about. He started the month at 34.6, solidly in the obese range. He crossed into overweight on day 23. By the day 30 morning he read 28.8. The muscle percentage rising is worth reading correctly. It is a share, not a gain. Fat is leaving so much faster than everything else that muscle occupies a bigger slice of a smaller body.

The waist number came later and by accident. On day 34 he mentioned that his 36 inch shorts now fit loose after starting the fast at about 40 inches. His ring slides on freely and his shoes fit again. The tape measure and the wardrobe agree with the scale.

The ketone arc, one strip every morning

His urine strip told the whole month in one line. Blank on days 1 through 3 while the body ran down its stored carbohydrate. A 5 on day 4, the first trace. Then a climb to 16, the darkest square on the chart, by day 8. And then 16 every single morning for over three weeks, the flattest and most boring graph on the site, which is exactly what deep steady ketosis looks like on a home strip.

The broth ended the streak. 16 on the day 30 morning, 4 on day 31, 0 on day 32. One small meal, three weeks of the darkest square gone. Urine strips only show the ketones the body is spilling. His read is that the incoming food and the returning water diluted the signal while the fat burn underneath carried on. The scale kept dropping while the strip read zero, which he covered on day 34.

The blood does not lie

A month of water shows up in blood. This project publishes all of it. The baseline draw before day 1 found a fasting glucose of 106, in the prediabetes range, which is the single best argument for the whole fast. The month 1 panel, drawn on day 31 from an at home kit, came back with 25 markers and only 4 percent out of range. Cholesterol, kidney markers, hormones, the lot, published in full next to the baseline on the bloodwork page.

That page is also where the honest limits live. The two panels came from different labs and mostly measure different things. The page compares only what can actually be compared and says so out loud.

What John does every day of the month

His routine, not a plan for you.

  • Water through the day, more when the strip needs flushing.
  • Celtic salt and electrolytes on the schedule his doctor approved.
  • Walks only. No workouts, no lifting, nothing heroic.
  • A morning weigh in and a morning strip, both photographed, both published.
  • A daily video, whatever the number says.
  • The doctor has stop authority. If she says eat, he eats.

The warning signs that would end the fast are the standard ones. Severe dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting, confusion. Any of those means the fast is over and the phone comes out.

Who should never attempt this

  • Anyone without a doctor who knows them and has agreed to supervise.
  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with diabetes or on blood sugar medication.
  • Anyone with a heart condition, kidney disease or a history of an eating disorder.
  • Anyone under 18.
  • Anyone on daily medication that assumes food.

A 30 day fast is not a harder version of a 3 day fast. It is a different category of event. The 3 day version is where most healthy adults who are curious should point their curiosity. There is a full guide built from the first 72 hours of this same record.

Day 30 is a third of the way

For John the 30 day mark was not a finish line. He marked it with one small bowl of broth, paid for it in ketones, learned the lesson in public and went back on water toward day 90.

The fast is live right now. Today’s number is on the daily notes page, every lab is on bloodwork and day 45, the halfway mark, is coming.

Quick answers

How much weight can you lose in a 30 day water fast?

John lost 36.6 pounds in his first 30 days, from 228.6 to 192.0. He touched 190.2 on the morning of day 30 before a small planned broth put some water weight back. That is one man's measured result, not a promise. The shape matters more than the total. His first week took off 17.2 pounds because stored water leaves with the body's carbohydrate. After that the pace settled to a little under a pound a day of mostly fat. A heavier person tends to drop more, a lighter person less. Nobody keeps the water portion of the early loss once they eat again.

Is a 30 day water fast safe?

Not on your own. Thirty days without food is a medical event, not a challenge. The published human trials of prolonged water fasting run under supervision. Even those top out around 40 days. John does it with a doctor who has known him for years and who watched him complete an 83 day supervised fast before this one. She sees monthly bloodwork, he reports symptoms honestly and she holds stop authority. His month 1 panel came back with 96 percent of markers in the normal zone, which is what that supervision is for. Anyone with a medical condition, on daily medication, pregnant, under 18 or with an eating disorder history should not water fast at all.

What happens to your body after 30 days of only water?

The first two days burn stored carbohydrate and shed the water stored with it. Then the body switches to fat and runs on ketones, which John's urine strip showed as a climb from blank to 5 to 16 across the first week. After that it is a long steady burn. Over his 30 days his BMI fell from 34.6 to 28.8, his body fat reading dropped from 42.3 to 31.7 percent, hunger faded into occasional waves and food smells got sharper. His month 1 blood panel put only 4 percent of markers out of range. His experience, measured daily, on one page here.

Do you lose muscle during a month of water fasting?

Some muscle loss comes with any fast this long, which is one reason it needs a doctor watching. John's home scale tells an interesting story on this. His muscle reading went from 34.5 to 37.3 percent over the 30 days. That does not mean he gained muscle. It is a percentage, so as fat leaves, muscle becomes a bigger share of a smaller body. The honest read is that his fat is leaving much faster than anything else. He keeps activity to walking only, no workouts. His doctor tracks the bloodwork that would flag a problem.

Does hunger go away after 30 days without food?

Mostly. Not in a straight line though. John's hunger faded after the first week and then came back in waves he had to ride out around day 10. By the fourth week the pattern was not hunger so much as sharpened senses. On day 22 the smell of fried chicken from a neighbor's yard stopped him cold. He talked about it on camera instead of eating. Weekends stayed harder than weekdays the whole month because the eating cues are everywhere. What never showed up was the gnawing daily hunger people expect. The body stops asking once it is fully running on fat.

How do you break a 30 day water fast?

Slowly, in small steps, on a doctor's plan. This is the one part of a long fast with real medical danger attached, because the body needs time to restart digestion. John has not broken his fast yet, he is continuing toward 90 days. But his day 30 broth is the best small scale demonstration on record here. One small vegetable broth and a quarter of an avocado, planned as a one time marker of a third of the way, dropped his ketone strip from 16 to 0 in two mornings and put 2.4 pounds of water back on the scale. If a quarter of an avocado does that after 30 days, a real refeed is not something to improvise.
