10 Day Water Fast. Real Results, What Happens Each Day and One Measured Ten Days
Ten days is where a water fast stops being something you can talk yourself through. The first week has a story arc. The tenth day has a routine. Almost every 10 day water fast page online is written from research about what should happen. This one is written from ten days that were actually lived, weighed and photographed, inside a doctor supervised 90 day water fast that is still running as you read this. John, 56, stepped on the same scale every morning, dipped a ketone strip every morning and said how he felt on camera every day. Nothing below is rounded to make a point.
What a 10 day water fast is
Ten full days with water only. No food, no juice, no broth, no coffee. John drinks plain water plus Celtic salt and electrolytes on his doctor’s say so, which is his choice and not a recommendation.
Counting matters here more than at any other length, because ten is a milestone people announce. This site counts mornings. Day 1 is the first morning without breakfast. The morning of day 11 is the 240 hour mark, ten full days without food. John also marked ten days done on the morning of day 10, his tenth fasting morning. Both counts appear on this page with their own numbers and nothing hides in the rounding.
The ten days in one sentence. Day 3 is the price, day 4 through day 7 is the reward and day 8 through day 10 is the part nobody warns you about, where the body is completely fine and the mood, the taste in your mouth and one missed glass of water become the whole story.
The ten days, one morning at a time
- DAY 1 · 228.6 LBRunning on stored carbohydrate
Glycogen from the liver and muscles carries the day. Energy feels normal. Hunger arrives at meal times because the body still expects food then. Strip blank.
- DAY 2 · 224.2 LBThe fuel switch begins
Down 4.4 overnight, the biggest single drop of the entire fast. Glycogen is stored with water and the two leave together. The liver starts making ketones. Strip still blank.
- DAY 3 · 220.6 LBThe hard day
The worst day of the ten. His words were sluggish, low on energy, a little anxious, my body is stressed and I can feel it. Down 8.0 pounds and the strip is still blank after 48 hours.
- DAY 4 · 218.0 LBThe other side
The edge comes off. Energy returns and the strip shows its first trace of ketones, a 5 on the chart. Down 10.6 at the 72 hour mark.
- DAY 5 · 216.0 LBOfficially in ketosis
A clear strip reading of 8 and John calls the switch official. I feel good, I sleep well, I have plenty of energy. His baseline labs land this day, including the fasting glucose of 106 that is the reason for the whole project.
- DAY 6 · 214.0 LBThe first electrolyte warning
Leg cramps. The strip dips back to 4, which is what a hydration swing looks like on a urine test. Fourteen and a half pounds down in six days.
- DAY 7 · 212.5 LBAppetite gone
One week by his count. I feel good, I feel energetic. And at this point I have lost my appetite. I am not hungry. Just very sensitive to smells.
- DAY 8 · 211.4 LBThe strip pegs and the mood turns
The 168 hour mark and the first 16 on the chart, the darkest square. Physically fine. Mentally cranky, which he says shows up at this point on every long fast he has done.
- DAY 9 · 209.4 LBThe morning his joints went quiet
Under 210 for the first time. He wakes with very little of the joint and muscle discomfort a 56 year old body normally reports on the way out of bed. Strip holds at 16.
- DAY 10 · 208.7 LBTen mornings and the hunger wave
Down 19.9 and the smallest drop yet at 0.7. The night before he forgot to drink water all day and real hunger came back for the first time since day 3. He sat down, got calm and rode it out.
- DAY 11 MORNING · 207.2 LBThe 240 hour mark
Ten full days complete. Down 21.4 pounds, about 9.4 percent of him, with the strip still at 16. A metallic taste has moved in and he raises his water to a gallon and a half a day.
John’s real ten days, morning by morning
All weights are first thing in the morning on the same bathroom scale. The ketone number is the Keto Mojo urine strip matched against the chart on the bottle, where 0 is blank and 16 is the darkest square.

207.2 lb. Down 21.4 in ten full days.
What 21.4 pounds in ten days is actually made of
This is the number people come to this page for and it is the number most likely to mislead them.
Glycogen, the body’s stored carbohydrate, is held with roughly three grams of water per gram of carbohydrate. The first two mornings sent 8.0 pounds out the door and most of that was water riding along with the fuel it was stored with. Nobody burns 8 pounds of fat in 48 hours. From day 8 forward the mornings ran 1.1, 2.0, 0.7 and 1.5 pounds. That back half is where the loss looks like real fat loss. The published reviews of prolonged water fasting describe the same curve, a fast early drop that settles into a slower steady loss.
John said it himself on day 10 before he had any way to prove it. His forecast from two previous long fasts was about half a pound to a pound a day from there forward. His own following weeks tested that. Week 1 took off 16.1 pounds by his day 7 count. Week 2 took 8.8. Week 3 took 4.7. Anyone advertising ten pound weeks after the first one is selling something.
Some of the water walks back in with the first meals. On day 30 a single small broth and a quarter of an avocado put 2.4 pounds back on his scale in two mornings, 190.2 up to 192.6. That is not failure, that is what carbohydrate and sodium do. The fat that burned during the ten days stays gone.
What the body scan says after ten days
The scale is the loud number. The composition numbers are the quiet ones and they moved in the direction a supervised fast wants.
Read the muscle line carefully, because this is where fasting pages start lying. Muscle percent going up does not mean muscle was built. It means fat left faster than anything else. Muscle became a bigger share of a smaller man. Share is not mass. What the number does honestly say is that ten days without food did not gut his muscle share, which is the fear people bring to a fast this long. These readings come from the same consumer body composition scale every morning and they belong on the bloodwork page next to the lab draws, which are the harder evidence.
The three days the first week does not teach you
Days 1 through 7 are covered in detail in the 7 day water fast guide. What follows is the part that only shows up when a fast runs past a week.
- Day 8, the cranky phase. Physically nothing changed. He had energy and lived a normal day. The mood is what turned. His words were that he is starting to feel cranky and that this is normal for him, that it showed up at this exact point on his 40 day fast and his 83 day fast. He says it stays in the background for the rest of the ride. He treats it as weather, not as a red flag.
- Day 9, the joints going quiet. He woke with very little of the joint and muscle discomfort he normally carries. If you are 56 and have carried extra weight for years, you know that first minute out of bed. That morning there was almost nothing. He reads it as inflammation coming down. One good morning is not a study. It is also the reason he says he keeps doing this.
- Day 10, the hunger wave. The most useful three minutes in the whole ten days. Hunger left him on day 4 and everyone assumes that is permanent. It is not.
The night the hunger came back. I was doing a whole bunch of stuff. And I forgot to drink water. During the evening the hunger set in. I mean the hunger really set in. I had to sit down, calm myself down and ride the wave. John, on the evening before his day 10 weigh in.
Thirst and hunger share wiring and on a water fast there is no food sitting in the stomach to blur the signal. A day of running around without water turned into an evening that felt like starving. The technique he used is worth more than any tip on this page. No snack, no trick, no speech about willpower. Sit down, get calm, drink the water you owe your body and wait. His line about it is the one to keep. The wave always looks permanent while you are in it. It never is. The full account is in his day 10 journal note.
The metallic taste at the 240 hour mark
The other thing that arrives around here is a taste nobody warns you about. On the morning of day 11 John had a metallic taste in his mouth that would not brush away.
The mechanism is not mysterious. Burning fat produces ketones. One of them, acetone, is volatile enough to leave through the lungs rather than the kidneys. It comes out on the breath and lands on the tongue. That is why brushing your teeth does nothing for it. His strip was pinned at 16 the same morning. The taste and the reading were telling the same story from two directions.

Holding at 16, deep in the dark band.

Pinned at the top of the chart at the 240 hour mark.
Day 11 is also when he changed the routine. Between the missed water of day 9 and a mild thirst he did not like the feel of, he raised his intake to a gallon and a half a day and added electrolytes with a little bit of salt. Ten days of zero sodium coming in and plenty of water going out is exactly when that call gets made. The day 11 note has his own explanation of both.
What ten days does not do
A page that only lists wins is an advertisement. Here is the other column, from the same data.
- It did not change his BMI class. He started at a BMI of 34.6 and stood at 31.4 on the morning of day 11. Both of those are still in the obese range. He did not cross into overweight until day 23, at 199.6 pounds.
- It did not touch the number the fast is actually for. His baseline fasting glucose was 106, flagged high, which is inside the range the American Diabetes Association calls prediabetes. Ten days without food does not produce a new blood panel. That is why his fast is 90 days with monthly labs and not ten.
- It cannot show you autophagy. Autophagy is real cellular science and the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to the work behind it. The hour by hour autophagy charts all over the internet are not measurements and nothing in a kitchen can confirm one. This page will not draw you a schedule it cannot back up. What it can show you is a scale, a strip and a blood panel.
- It does not make the long fasts on the internet a target. The 382 day medically supervised fast in the literature is a case report from the 1960s, not a goal. John's own 83 day fast happened years ago under his doctor. Ten days is already past the point where doing it alone is a good idea.
What John does each day
His routine, not a plan for you.
- Water through the day. Between half a gallon and a gallon early on, raised to a gallon and a half from day 11.
- Celtic salt and electrolytes on the schedule his doctor approved. The day 6 leg cramps are what running low feels like.
- Walks only. No lifting, no running, no workouts, all ten days.
- A morning weigh in on the same scale and a morning ketone strip, both photographed.
- Normal life otherwise. Work, TV, things around the house.
- The doctor has stop authority. If she says eat, he eats.
The warning signs he watches for are the ones every source on water fasting lists. Severe dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting, confusion. Any of those ends the fast and starts a phone call, not a push through.
Who should not do a 10 day water fast
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone with diabetes or on blood sugar medication.
- Anyone with a heart condition, kidney disease or a history of an eating disorder.
- Anyone under 18.
- Anyone on daily medication that assumes food.
Past that list, ten days is well beyond where fasting is a solo project. A weekend is short enough that many healthy adults handle it alone. Ten days without food deserves a doctor who knows you, because the risks that actually matter, heart rhythm, electrolytes and refeeding, are the exact ones you cannot feel coming. John is a 56 year old man whose doctor watched him complete a supervised 83 day fast before this one. That is why he can do what he does. It is not a reason for you to do it alone.
Coming back to food after ten days
The refeed is the most dangerous part of a ten day fast and it is the part with the least content written about it. The body has fully switched fuels and a careless first meal is the classic mistake. Small, simple, slow, built up over days, cleared by a doctor.
John’s own evidence for how sensitive the system gets came later in the same fast. On day 30 he had one small broth and a quarter of an avocado. His scale went from 190.2 to 192.6 over the next two mornings and his ketone strip fell from 16 to 4 to 0 and then stayed blank for four straight mornings. His words were that a quarter of an avocado is not free. If that is what one small serving does after a month, it is worth respecting after ten days.
Where ten days sits inside a 90 day fast
Here is the perspective that no standalone 10 day fast page can give you. This fast kept going. The ten day number can be measured against what came after it.
Through day 40 John is down 44.3 pounds, from 228.6 to 184.3. The first ten full days delivered 21.4 of those pounds. That is just under half the total loss, from about a quarter of the days. Ten days is not a small slice of a long fast. It is the front loaded, most dramatic slice. Knowing that is the difference between reading a ten day result honestly and reading it as a rate.
Ten days in his own words. Double digits on the day counter, twenty pounds on the scale. That is the milestone version of the story. John, day 10.
If you want the part before this, the 3 day guide covers the hard first stretch and the 7 day guide covers the first full week. If you want the part after it, the 30 day guide shows what a month does and the stages guide lays the whole timeline out. Today’s number is on the daily notes page and every lab result is on the bloodwork page, updated as the 90 days run.

Eleven X marks on the calendar. Ten full days behind him and seventy nine to go.
Quick answers
How much weight do you lose on a 10 day water fast?
John lost 21.4 pounds in ten full days, 228.6 down to 207.2 by the morning of day 11, about 9.4 percent of his starting weight. That is one real measured number from the same bathroom scale every morning and it needs honest reading. The first 48 hours took off 8.0 pounds and most of that was water leaving with stored carbohydrate. By the second half of the ten days the mornings were running between 0.7 and 2.0 pounds as fat burning carried the load. A lighter person loses less. Some of the water comes back with the first meals afterward. The fat that burned stays gone.
Is day 10 or day 11 the end of a ten day fast?
Both counts are honest and this site says which one it is using. John counts mornings. Day 1 is the first morning without food. The morning of day 11 is the 240 hour mark, ten full days. That morning read 207.2 pounds and 21.4 down. He also celebrated ten days done on the morning of day 10 at 208.7 pounds and 19.9 down, because day 10 is the tenth morning he woke up fasting. This guide uses the 240 hour number as the result of the ten days. Pick one way of counting, say which one you picked and stay consistent.
What does the ketone strip read after 10 days of fasting?
John's read 16 mg/dl on the Keto Mojo chart, the darkest square on the bottle. It had been pinned there since the morning of day 8. The arc before that is the useful part. Blank on days 1, 2 and 3, a first trace of 5 on day 4, an 8 on day 5, a dip back to 4 on day 6, an 8 on day 7 and then 16 on days 8, 9, 10 and 11. Urine strips swing with hydration so a single morning never tells the story. Ten mornings in a row do.
Does hunger come back on a 10 day water fast?
It can and it did. Hunger faded for John around day 4 and by day 7 he said his appetite was gone completely. Then on the evening of day 9 it came back hard. The cause was simple. He had been running around all day and forgot to drink water. Thirst and hunger share wiring and on a water fast there is no food buffer sitting in the stomach. His fix was not willpower. He sat down, calmed himself, drank the water he owed his body and waited for the wave to pass. Once it passed the hunger was gone again.
Why do you get a metallic taste after 10 days of fasting?
Deep ketosis is the reason and John hit it on day 11 with his strip pinned at the top of the chart. When the body burns fat it makes ketones. One of them, acetone, is volatile enough to leave through the lungs. It rides out on every breath and lands on the tongue as a metallic or chemical taste. It is not coming from the teeth or the stomach. Brushing does not kill it. His words were that it is expected and there is nothing you can do about it. It is not a warning sign. It is a receipt.
Is a 10 day water fast safe?
Ten days without food is a medical undertaking, not a wellness reset. Every standard warning applies at this length, dizziness, heart rhythm problems, fainting, electrolyte loss and dangerous refeeding if food comes back carelessly. John does this under a doctor who has known him for years, with monthly bloodwork and stop authority. She watched him complete a supervised 83 day fast before this one. Anyone pregnant, diabetic, on daily medication, under 18 or with a history of an eating disorder should not attempt ten days of fasting at all. This site reports what John does. It does not tell you what to do.
